Mel and I lie in our beds in the dark.

‘Well, I didn’t see that coming,’ says Mel. ‘I feel really crap that I set us off down that track. I just thought it would be funny, you know, telling ghost stories, lighten the mood a bit. Got that wrong, didn’t I?’

‘It wasn’t your fault,’ I say, keen to reassure her. ‘I don’t see how anyone could have known what was going to happen.’

Neither of us makes the obvious joke about psychics.

We lie in silence for a moment. I’m not sure what’s running through Mel’s head, but I’m feeling grateful. My life definitely has its ups and downs, but nothing that comes anywhere close to this. I’d assumed the old people on the coach were just rude and grumpy. I hadn’t really thought about what they might have had to deal with until this point, how that might colour their outlook on life. I mean, some of them are rude and grumpy, but maybe we should cut them a bit of slack.

‘I’m thinking this evening might have done some good, though,’ Mel adds. ‘You know, been cathartic in a way.’

‘Yes,’ I say, trying to make it sound as if it’s a really good point well made. ‘I’m sure it’ll bring us all a bit closer together from now on.’

But as I lie there staring up at the inky ceiling, I’m not sure.

How can it ever be good for someone to be in so much pain?
